Zombieland Wins SXSW Excellence in Title Design Award

Designed by Ben Conrad of Logan, the main title of Zombieland combined spectacular slow motion live action scenes of attacking zombies and a powerful score by Metallica with suiting typography. Pure solid entertainment, so the jury voted anonymously for this title sequence.

Fons Schiedon’s 3D Opener for Pictoplasma

This just in: excellent atmospheric disorienting stuff by Schiedon for the Pictoplasma festival. Look out for the sort of “retina splitting err-what-the-hell-am-I-looking-at kind of effect” that Schiedon was aiming for (his words). Oh, and wear your 3D glasses before watching the video.

The Making of Logorama

Six months ago the Etappes published a superb video of the making of the Oscar-winning short on Vimeo. Very worthwhile even if you don’t speak French. There are clips of the animatic and character studies. Logorama creators Ludovic Houplain, Hervé de Crécy et François Alaux of H5 discuss logos and reappropriation.

Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers

Been following Harmony Korine‘s career ever since I first saw his debut Gummo at the International Rotterdam Film Festival in 1997. Korine -black leather jacket, holding a can of beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other- took in the applause from the sold-out room like a pro. America’s avant-garde Wunderkind is back … Continued

I’m Here by Spike Jonze

Spike Jonze unveiled his first ever love story this week, a 30-minute romance between two robots living and loving in Los Angeles. Those of us who couldn’t make it to the first-ever Opening Night’s Shorts Program at Sundance due to prior engagements however, must make do with the (albeit tasty) trailer until March, when the … Continued

DocLab Highlights

It’s nigh on impossible to pick out the highlights from this year’s DocLab – because the whole thing was so darned exceptional – and I’m not just saying that. Really! Whereas other documentary festivals may have a slightly shoddy sideline in New Media, DocLab show-cases the cream of web content (documentaries, cross-media fun stuff, data-visualization, … Continued

Fashion Film Kicks Into High Gear

Any excuse to organize a cool film festival is a good excuse. We especially love festivals centered around niche or offbeat themes. (Like the amazing G.I. Joe Stop-Motion Film Festival we wrote about earlier). And what other city than Paris could best serve as the host for the upcoming Shaded View On Fashion Film Festival … Continued

G.I. Joe Fest returns in 2009

This must be the craziest, and quite possibly the most fun film festival… ever! The 3rd Edition of the G.I. Joe Stop-Motion Film Festival offers filmgoers an exciting array of contemporary narrative, documentary and short films, all in stop-motion fashion, all featuring – yes, peeps, for real – the testosterone-charged military-themed US action figure! Renewed … Continued

New Michel Gondry Doc

Long-time music video darling of the Extra Cool club (Björk, White Stripes, Daft Punk, Radiohead to name but a few), pioneer of the Bullet Time technique and director of some very good movies, Michel Gondry recently premiered a new documentary L’Epine dans le Coeur (The Thorn in the Heart to you mono-linguists). Following up from … Continued

Died Young, Stayed Pretty: film about rock poster design

The just-released trailer for Eileen Yaghoobians’ new documentary introduces us to the parallel universe of American indie rock poster design. Chopping up the paradoxes of Western civilization, and gluing, Xeroxing and silk-screening them into eye-popping graphic posters for the likes of Sonic Youth and Arcade Fire, the pioneers of underground poster production (including SubmarineChannel fave … Continued
