What is it with Germans and red balloons? Ballooon Project: Berlin is part of the Disposable Film Festival online program, and features a video camera (type: unkown) tied to a bunch of red balloons that is set free to capture scenes of a rainy Berlin from on high, while the filmmakers cycle around the city trying (and failing) to keep up.
The DFF is one of several new festivals that celebrate the use of non-professional devices like mobile phones and webcams to stimulate a new wave in do-it-yourself visual culture. The sheer scope of what people come up with, from plasticine-fuelled thrash gore to head-shaving high jinks, is entertaining in itself. But a Flickr-esque byline stating additional technological info for each film would not go amiss here, as let’s face it, right now these festivals are more like a reference tool of what’s possible than an ode to great creative talent of the digital age.
