Digital Documentary Gets Taken Seriously

Amsterdam’s international documentary mega-fest IDFA introduces, for the first time in the history of humanity, a brand new award for its interactive / new media / transmedia / crossmedia (oh whatevs!) program: IDFA DocLab. PROOF that interactive storytelling is no longer the subordinate sidekick of traditional formats. Huzzah! The three jury members are hotshot veterans of the genre – Alex Brachet from the pioneering Parisian studio Upian, Antoinette Hoes, new media expert and director of Amsterdam interactive studio Leylines, and Zach Wise, charming multimedia uberlord of the celebrated New York Times online. And the nominees are…. The gorgeous debut web doc Soul Patron by supersweet German manchild Frederik Rieckher, California Is A Place, brief impressions shot on the dark fringes of the Golden State, and finally (of course!) the brilliant 360-degree interactive documentary HIGHRISE/Out My Window.
