The Lost Art of Preloaders

The web is the perfect digital shoebox for archiving obsolete, ephemeral web phenomena like the Preloader. In pre-broadband days, the preloader replaced the boring old progress bar for something more original, creative and funny. Its function was of course to keep our eyes focused firmly on our screens, while we waited for those flash-heavy websites to load. But the fun didn’t last long.

Due to broadband, the once blooming culture of preloaders is now dead and almost forgotten (sob), were it not for creative agency Big Spaceship (jay!). To honor the ancient art of ‘preloading’, Big Spaceship created Pretty Loaded – a great website that allows you to just sit back and watch a selection of the best preloaders. In their own words: “Pretty Loaded is an archive of preloaders that preload other preloaders”. Waiting has never been this fun!
