Reporting live and direct from Berlinale 2011, we bring you a fresh dollop of our old buddy Miranda July, in the form of her spanking new feature, The Future. This morning’s European premiere at the Palast theater (a.k.a Berlinale’s sumptuous red-carpet zenith) hosted a packed audience of frantic July-worshippers – and judging by the minimal amount of walk-outs, their enthusiasm did not go unwarranted! The plot follows the everyday minutiae of L.A thirty-something couple Sophie (played by July) and Jason (Hamish Linklater) over the course of a month, as they await the adoption date of a moribund cat they selected from the sanctuary. The movie is a quirky (but of course!) ode to our weird existence, in this, the era of infinite choice and endless possibility. How do we pass the time as we wait for life’s defining moments?
