We recently visited a conference about cross media production in broadcasting. Apart from the usual web 2.0. blah-blah, we saw something absolutely amazing, something that made enduring all the cliché-ridden speeches really worth while. It was the presentation of Sony’s CineAlta 4K digital projector. This monster is capable of reproducing images in full 4K: 4096 x 2160 pixels. Watching footage which is especially shot with 4K camera’s (RED is actually building a 5K camera at the moment) really is a breathtaking experience. We never saw such sharp digital images in a theatre before. It’s more realistic than life itself.
Frank Kresin, project manager at CineGrid sees lots of advantages for creative filmmakers. He mentions a project by Maarten de Heer who is working on a animation film in which we see a cityscape from a bird’s-eye perspective (see image). “The richness of details stand out beautifully due to the super sharp projection, it really gives this animation the extra value it deserves.”
What does CineGrid do? “We invite artists and filmmakers to explore the possibilities of the 4K technology, not only in the field of shooting and projecting of ultra-high digital images, but also in the deployment of new ways of cooperating during the post-production stage. We operate an advanced network using Grid computing technologies, which allows people from different corners of the globe to exchange the uncompressed, high quality footage for editing and audio mixing. This is maybe the most revolutionary thing about what we do at the moment.”
