Revision:lab

Met 3 very nice artists yesterday at an event in Utrecht about audiovisual art on the internet called re:visie:lab. As a curator and producer of web art, we were invited to do a presentation. Thought it’d be nice to hand you some links to the other projects that were presented – Ethereal Self, Found Tapes Exhibition and Democracy Player are all unique, smart or wonderfully strange gems in their own right.

Ethereal Self
Turn on your webcam and see yourself reflected in the image of a giant diamond – that’s the idea behind Ethereal Self – a web art piece by programmer-turned-artist Harm van den Dorpel. Harm later told us that artist Miltos Manetas acquired the web piece for his collection. Harm also revealed himself as the person behind Club Internet – a brand-free, logo-free and text-free web gallery that focuses on re-contextualizing existing content found on the internet (anything from web.art to movies to images). Each month he invites a different guest curator to do a show. (Use the grey bar on top of your browser window to navigate).

Found Tapes
Like a true beachcomber, Harold Schellinx roams the streets of Brooklyn, Paris, Amsterdam and other cities to look for cast-away magnetic tape material from discarded cassette tapes. He carefully restores the tapes (a very time-comsuming job) and presents selected audio clips on his website, which you can download as MP3 files (great for your iPod). Check out Exhibit #29 for example, which includes 3 rather painful phone conversations between a French musician and a Warner Bros executive.

Remote control / Democracy player
Danish artist Linda Hilfling won the award for Best Young Designer at the 2008 International Design Biennial in St.Etienne for her Google Misspelling Generator. She mostly talked about her experiments with democratic media and presented her latest project ‘Remote control / Democracy player’. Taking the word “TV program” literally – as in: software executing TV transmissions – Linda built a web-interface that allows the viewer to control the TV transmission of a local Copenhagen tv channel.
